GE approaches corporate citizenship with the same set of goals, strategies and accountability that drive other parts of the business. This makes good citizenship a way of life at GE and a natural part of the way the company works.
The signature corporate citizenship program of GE Capital, Americas is called In the Community, For the Community (ICFC). We know that not-for-profits face the same operational and organizational challenges as for-profit companies but have fewer resources. That's why ICFC has three components - financial support, volunteerism and skill building.
ICFC's primary focus is education, specifically out-of-school programs. Some relevant statistics:
- 14.3 million school-age children have to look after themselves after school because their parents have to work outside the home.
- Teens who participate in after-school programs are three times less likely to skip classes, use drugs and consume alcohol than teens who do not participate.
In 2010, GE Capital worked with a number of education-focused community organizations. Here are three examples:
- We helped Girls Inc. of Metropolitan Dallas to manage projects/events and allocate budgets more effectively.
- We guided the Regional YMCA of Western Connecticut in Danbury to implement organizational change.
- We lent our advice when it came to enhancing the after-school program of Glendale Middle School in Salt Lake City, Utah.
We believe the essence of corporate citizenship is the inextricable link between integrity and performance to the point that they become one and the same.
